Amazfit T-Rex 3 Review: Rugged Mid-Range Sports Watch

What It Is

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 is a rugged, multi-sport GPS watch aimed at outdoor and endurance athletes who want durable hardware without paying Garmin Fenix or Suunto Vertical prices. It sits firmly in the mid-range segment, regularly discounted up to 45% during sale events, making it one of the more aggressively priced options in a crowded category. The target user is someone who trains on trails, ruck-marches, or cycles in variable conditions and needs a watch that survives the abuse.

Key Specs

Performance in the Real World

GPS accuracy is solid for the price tier. Multi-band tracking holds a reliable lock on technical trails where single-band watches lose signal, and route traces come back clean without the erratic spikes common on older Amazfit hardware. It is not quite at the level of Garmin's dual-band implementation on the Fenix 8, but at roughly one-third of the price, the gap is acceptable.

Heart rate accuracy during steady-state efforts tracks well. At high-intensity intervals, optical HR lags behind chest strap readings by 5 to 10 BPM, which is typical for wrist-based sensors. For threshold and easy aerobic training, the data is reliable enough to make training decisions from. Do not use it as your sole HR source for precise interval work.

Sleep tracking provides sleep stage breakdowns and HRV morning readiness scores. The data is directionally useful but tends to overestimate deep sleep duration compared to polysomnography benchmarks, a limitation shared by virtually every consumer wearable at this price.

Voice memos are a standout feature. Testing returned 98% transcription accuracy, which is high enough to make this genuinely useful for logging route notes or post-effort reflections mid-activity without stopping to type. The hard limitation is that recorded notes cannot be edited after capture. That needs a firmware fix.

Zepp OS 5, delivered via the December 2024 update, noticeably improved navigation responsiveness and added new sport modes including a dedicated Rucking mode. Amazfit has been pushing meaningful firmware updates on a consistent monthly cadence, which is a concrete advantage over brands that ship a product and move on. Early adopters are getting a better watch over time, not a neglected one.

App ecosystem: The Zepp app handles training load, recovery scores, and health trends. Integration with the Helio recovery strap adds context to overnight HRV data. Third-party integrations are limited compared to Garmin Connect's partner ecosystem, and Strava sync works but requires manual initiation on some firmware versions. If you live in a Garmin or Apple Health-centric training environment, expect some friction.

Who It Is For and Who Should Skip It

Buy the T-Rex 3 if you are an outdoor or adventure athlete on a budget, someone who runs trails, hikes in cold weather, or rucks with loaded packs and needs hardware that does not need babying. It is also the right call if you are already invested in the Amazfit or Zepp ecosystem and want cohesive data across devices including the Helio strap.

Skip it if you rely on deep third-party app integration, need precise interval-level heart rate accuracy from the wrist, or want turn-by-turn navigation with detailed topographic maps. The Garmin Instinct 2X Solar handles those use cases better, though it costs significantly more and lacks the T-Rex 3's AMOLED display. Also skip it if editing voice memos mid-training is non-negotiable, because right now you cannot.

Verdict

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 delivers rugged hardware, multi-band GPS, and a genuinely useful feature set at a price that undercuts the Garmin Fenix and Suunto Vertical by a wide margin. Amazfit's active firmware development makes it a safer long-term buy than most budget alternatives. It will not replace a Fenix 8 for serious multisport athletes, but for trail runners, hikers, and rucking enthusiasts who want durability and smart features without a flagship price, it is a strong recommendation.
