GPS and tracking accuracy

Battery life
This is the clearest difference between the two watches. The 265 gives approximately 13 hours in multi-band GPS mode and around 20 hours in standard GPS mode. That covers most marathons, half-ironmans, and a full day of trail running, but a 100-mile ultra or a 24-hour race will drain it.
The 965 gives 31 hours in full GPS mode and up to 110 hours in expedition mode. In a real-world 77-mile cycling test alongside the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the 965 held up convincingly. If you race events longer than a standard ironman or plan multi-day expeditions, the 965 is the only option between these two.
For athletes: who wins?
- Running (road and track): The 265 is sufficient. GPS accuracy is strong, training load metrics are present, and you save $150. Pick the 265.
- Trail running: The 965 wins. The firmware-addressed GPS drift fix under tree cover matters, and the battery headroom for long days in the mountains is a genuine safety margin. Pick the 965.
- Triathlon: Depends on distance. Sprint and Olympic triathletes do not need 31-hour GPS. The 265 handles it. Ironman and ultra-distance athletes should buy the 965 for battery alone.
- Recovery monitoring: Both watches use wrist optical PPG sensors to estimate HRV. Independent testing found HRV data from the 265 is not suitable for precise athlete monitoring. The 965 uses the same sensor type, so treat HRV trends as directional rather than clinical on either watch. Neither has a meaningful edge here.
Verdict
For most runners, the Forerunner 265 is the right call. It delivers accurate multi-band GPS, solid heart rate tracking, and a sharp AMOLED display at $150 less than the 965. The battery limitation only becomes a real problem above the ironman distance or on multi-day trail runs.
Buy the Forerunner 965 if you race long, train in dense trail environments where GPS drift has historically caused problems, or need a watch that doubles as a long-expedition device. The 31-hour GPS and firmware-improved trail accuracy justify the premium for serious endurance athletes. Everyone else should save the $150 and buy the 265.
