Garmin dropped 20+ products in 2025, making it their most expansive release year on record. Not all of them deserve your money. The5kRunner ran the numbers and logged the miles, so here is a clear-eyed breakdown of what to buy and what to skip.

The Forerunner 970 sits at the top of the running-specific pile. It builds on the 965 with better training load metrics, improved HRV tracking, and a sharper AMOLED display that holds up in direct sunlight better than the Apple Watch Ultra 2. For serious runners logging 70-plus miles per week, the structured workout tools and race predictor accuracy put it ahead of the Coros Pace 3 in real-world usability.

The Venu 4 is the lifestyle pick, and it is genuinely good at that job. Battery life sits around 10 days in smartwatch mode, which beats the Apple Watch Series 10 by a wide margin. The health tracking suite, including Garmin's Body Battery and sleep staging, competes directly with Whoop 4.0 but comes with a screen and GPS built in. If you train three to five days a week and want one device for everything, this makes sense.

The Instinct 3 is where opinions split. It keeps the rugged, no-nonsense form factor that adventure athletes love, and the solar charging version can push battery life past 40 days in smartwatch mode. The trade-off is a low-resolution display that feels dated next to the Fenix 8 Pro or even the Polar Grit X2 Pro. Athletes doing long ultras or multi-day fastpacking will appreciate the durability and battery. Road runners and triathletes probably will not.

Not every 2025 Garmin launch landed well. Some mid-tier releases felt like minor spec bumps dressed up as new products, and the price gaps between tiers are harder to justify than in previous years. Fenix 8 Pro owners from 2024 have little reason to upgrade. Buy the Forerunner 970 if running is your priority. The Venu 4 if you want health tracking without complexity.
