Garmin Connect Hints at Waze Ride Sharing

Garmin Connect version 5.31 contains hints of a Waze integration that could let cyclists share their ride location with nearby drivers. According to 9to5Google, the feature is called “Waze Location Sharing” and would use Garmin LiveTrack data, potentially making riders visible within Waze navigation.
The safety case is obvious. A watch can already record the route, while LiveTrack can share a rider’s location. Bringing that live position into an app drivers actively use for directions could create a timely warning near an intersection or along a route. For road cyclists, especially those riding busy commuter corridors or long training loops, that is far more useful than another post-ride data field.
The important detail is consent: cyclists would need to opt in manually. That is the right approach. Live location is sensitive data, and athletes should choose when a ride is visible rather than have sharing quietly switched on. It also suggests this may be a ride-specific safety tool, not a permanent map marker. Garmin users looking for a new watch can also find current [Garmin Black Friday deals](/en/articles/garmin-black-friday-deals-span-forerunner-70-to-fenix-8-2026-11-02), though this integration appears tied to Garmin Connect rather than a particular device.
There is plenty missing. 9to5Google says the implementation remains unclear: we do not know whether Waze will show a cyclist as an icon, issue an approach alert, or treat riders like a road hazard. There is no release date either. Code found in an app can point to an early test as easily as a feature that never reaches users.
Still, this is a smart direction for Garmin and Waze. If it becomes a clear, opt-in alert for drivers, it could be a genuinely practical safety layer for Garmin cyclists, rather than another metric to scroll past after the ride.
