Garmin Varia RTL515 Successor Expected Soon With USB-C and Better Battery

Nine months after the EU banned certain flashing light patterns, Garmin's Varia RTL515 radar tail light is still operating under restrictions that limit its visibility modes for European cyclists. The ban targets specific flash frequencies deemed unsafe under EU road regulations, which leaves riders with fewer alerting options than the original product promised.

A next-generation Varia unit is now widely expected, and the upgrade list looks meaningful. USB-C charging would finally replace the frustrating proprietary connector, and improved light modes suggest Garmin is redesigning the flash patterns to comply with EU standards from the ground up rather than just patching the existing firmware.

For cyclists who rely on the RTL515 daily, battery life is the other pressure point. The current unit gives you around 16 hours in radar-only mode and 6 hours with the light running, which is fine for most training rides but tight for long sportives or bikepacking days. A bump there would make a real difference paired with a Garmin Edge 1050 or even a Wahoo Elemnt Rival setup.

The timing matters. Darker months in the northern hemisphere mean riders need reliable rear visibility now, not in spring. If Garmin misses that window, cyclists will keep shopping Cycliq Fly12 alternatives or just running aftermarket lights alongside the RTL515.

Not a crisis. But Garmin needs to move fast on this one.
