Garmin Connect Leak Points to Direct Strava Social Features

A leak suggests Garmin is rebuilding Connect into a full social training platform, putting it on a direct collision course with Strava. Strava currently sits at 45 million active users, a number Garmin Connect does not match, but the gap tells only part of the story.

Garmin's real advantage is hardware depth. Connect already pulls richer data than Strava can touch: running dynamics, HRV status, Body Battery, Training Readiness, and sleep metrics that Whoop and Oura charge subscriptions for. Strava sees your splits. Garmin sees your physiology.

If Connect adds segment competition, social feeds, and club features with that data layer underneath, the value proposition flips. You would get Strava's social loop plus the kind of training load analysis that currently costs extra on Polar Flow or requires a Coros account on the side. One app instead of two.

Strava's counter is its existing community gravity and third-party integrations. Cyclists and runners are already there. Pulling them to a new feed is hard, even with better data. Garmin has tried social features before and they went nowhere.

Still, this is a credible threat. Garmin owns the hardware, owns the data pipeline, and now appears willing to invest in the social layer. Strava should be paying attention. Not perfect timing for Strava. But a real warning shot.
